Textured Wedding Cake Trends in Pink and White

We recently had the chance to provide dessert for a networking meeting of the New England Chapter of the National Association of Catering and Events (NACE) in Boston. I saw it as an opportunity to be playful with some recent wedding cake trends and a bold color palette of black, white and pink. A square cupcake stand was covered in black and white damask paper. It was the perfect backdrop for chocolate chip cupcakes with a swirl of pink buttercream and a sprinkle of sugar pearls. The three small cakes were finished in buttercream and they are examples of the trend towards textured designs. A pink and white textured hombre pattern is seen on one cake. Another cake had an over-all design of roses in pink buttercream, while the third cake with smooth sides was garnished with coconut on the top as another way to achieve a textured look. The cake flavors were Margarita Cake with Tequila and Lime, Chocolate Cake with Cappuccino Truffle filling and Pumpkin Spice Cake with a Caramel filling, something for everyone! Thanks to Jill Person of Person+ Killian Photography for these beautiful images.

Josh Howell - When planning your cake, think about color. Gather inspiration from the theme of your celebration. The icing colors you choose will carry that theme and personalize your decorating. Look around, notice everyday objects – from a garden in bloom, to the clothes people wear. Which colors appeal to you? Use your favorite colors in your decorating. Don’t be afraid to try something different. Have fun using rich, bright colors or different color combinations. Begin by making a monochromatic cake, decorated all in white or in a single, pale color. Try using color decorations in contrast to an all-white cake background. Decorate using all pastels or all primary colors. Experimenting with color will help you decide which colors work to make your cake designs spectacular.
